Bargaining Over Health on Digital Platforms: Care by Ad, Risk by Default
Bargaining Over Health on Digital Platforms: Care by Ad, Risk by Default

Today, on popular classified and service platforms, we often see ads such as “IV drip at home”, “wound dressing at home” or “physiotherapy at home”. But these platforms work by connecting people seeking care with unsupervised individuals rather than licensed institutions.

Health care is not like having your walls painted or your home treated for pests. It directly concerns human life and carries irreversible risks.

Platforms Do Not Check Competence

These sites are technology tools; they are not authorised to provide health care or to assess the medical competence of those who do.

  • No document checks: Platforms usually rely on a declaration or an image of a diploma. They do not check whether the diploma is current or genuine, or the person’s actual medical competence.
  • Confusion over authority: Even a competent nurse is not authorised to provide health care at home on their own.
  • Ads that admit an offence: People who write “I can set up IV drips and give injections” under a “caregiver” heading are in effect advertising an offence.

Trusting Reviews Instead of a License

The biggest mistake is to base medical trust on star ratings or user reviews. The first and most basic element of trust in health care is a license.

Remember: A health worker being friendly or punctual does not mean they can manage an acute medical crisis. Giving “1 star” after a disaster caused by a wrong procedure will not undo it.

No Legal Counterpart

When you call someone through these platforms, the relationship remains entirely personal and unregistered.

  • The platform takes no responsibility: Through their terms of use, platforms exclude themselves from any legal process.
  • Back-street health care: In the event of malpractice, there is no hospital or center to hold accountable. All your legal rights are left in limbo.

Digital Platforms or Licensed Centers?

When you receive care from a licensed home care center, you have these assurances:

  • Vetted staff: Staff diplomas, criminal records, vaccinations and competence are registered with the Provincial Health Directorate.
  • Institutional follow-up: Care is coordinated by a physician and a supervising nurse.
  • Institutional records: All medical records are kept, so you always know what was done.
  • Medical responsibility: The center is legally responsible for every procedure performed by its staff.

Conclusion: Health Care Comes With a License, Not an Ad

You can use classified sites to call a removal company, but you cannot choose the person who will put a needle in your vein from an ad.

Our proposal to platforms: For all health procedures at home, only licensed home care centers should be allowed to make offers. Individuals are not authorised to provide this service.

Entrust your loved ones not to the lack of oversight of digital marketplaces, but to the assurance of professional home care centers.
